Its a cold winters morning in Surrey and I feel the need to remind myself of he Summer and warmer places....
Theres more to the island of Mallorca than sun, sand and sangria. Although it is well known for its azure seas and stunning coastal scenery, there is a wealth of cultural gems for those that choose to venture away from the beach.

The Palma - Soller Railway is literally a blast from the past and a great way to see more of the island. It feels more like a tram as you leave through the capitals streets and head towards the lemon and olive groves of the interior. Rattling your way towards the mountainous north coast the lack of air conditioning is forgotten as you pass through various sections of the cool (in the old fashioned sense) Tunel de Soller. The train comes to a gentle halt just outside Soller in order to take in the stunning view from the viewpoint which overlooks the old town below. Its another opportunity for the photographers on board and everyone disembarks with cameras at the ready.
Once in Soller, theres the option of a tram to the picturesque Puerto de Soller, but theres plenty to see in the town itself.

Nestling amongst the mountains further to the West is the village of Valldemosa. Famous as a home to Polish composer Frederick Chopin and French author George Sand it is well worth a visit. Both stayed in the Royal Carthusian Monastery and their cells have been maintained as a museum to their works. There are some fascinating original manuscripts to see and if you are lucky you may get to hear one of the frequent recitals in the chapel.

Snow is falling here in Surrey and I now feel like I need a holiday somewhere hot. At least Im warmed slightly by memories of the Summer.
