An Aperture users Lightroom tale

Ok. So Ive made the switch. I havent got as far as copying all my Aperture files across yet, but have set up a file system that makes sense to me and am ready to go.

Ive played with a few sample images in the develop mode and have to say I am so impressed with how easy it is to get the right level of saturation, contrast and sharpness into my images. This is something I have always struggled with in Aperture, and if Im honest was never really happy with. In Lightroom a couple of quick adjustments and wham my images really pop, but in a nice way and not looking overcooked.

Im not sure yet how Im going to get my Nik software suite across to LR as I have the Aperture versions and bought these a few weeks before Google took over.  Dfine gives such great noise reduction and Id like to have it available, but I hear that noise reduction in LR is way ahead of Aperture so might not need it anyway.

This weekend I have a wedding and with a second shooter I am expecting to have well over 1,000 images to process. Im slightly nervous about how LR is going to handle these, but well see.

I have to say Ive been really impressed with LR so far. Its got many similarities to Aperture and although its taking a bit of getting used to, Im actually a bit excited about the switch.

This weekend will be the test.

To be continued....

So the weekend came and went, and with it I managed to collect 1200 image files to process, so back to Lightroom. Ive heard tales of how slow LR was compared to Aperture and the familiar, go and make a cup of coffee while your images upload. Well my experience was not so much make a cup of coffee more, grow the beans, pick, roast, grind, pack, ship etc you get the idea. OK, Im overdoing it, but it does seem slow. Having said that I do like the option to copy raw files to a backup location at the same time as uploading files. And actually if it takes a while to upload, so what, just savour that coffee...

So flagging (picks) is quick and easy and the smart preview option seems to work well. Keywording and metadata presets are all straightforward. The crop tool and level are not quite as intuitive as Aperture, but Im sure Ill get used to them. Im liking LR so far.

Sorting images by ISO is straightforward, I just need to work out how to use the spray paint can thing to apply noise reduction to a batch. (Can I do that?) Its taking some getting used to, but not as much as I thought. Overall, Im liking what LR gives me so far.

Will get in to adjustments when time allows.
