I had a bit of a nostalgic moment recently when my mind was cast back to family get-togethers in artificially darkened rooms, crammed full of close family (its a big family, and a small house) with the constant whirr of the fan on the trusty Rollei 35mm slide projector, punctuated by the kerrrschlunk of the manual slide loader and frequent howls of laughter and groans at another gem of an image remembered once more.
I recently managed to get hold of the family collection of old 35mm slides, which had been gathering dust for many a year in someones garage. Thankfully they were mostly in reasonable condition and with the help of the excellent Epson Perfection V500 Photo scanner, (www.epson.co.uk/Store/Scanners/Epson-Perfection-V500-Photo) managed to work through the best and share them with family and friends on Flickr.
So here is just one of many slides that have been through the Epson scanner. Thats me in front, circa nineteenseventysomething, and Mum behind. This image jumped out at me; I love how the composition evokes a combined but contrasting sense of movement complementing each other perfectly. As I look at this image I can feel the warm Cornish water lapping over my feet and the soft sand oozing between my toes. (Apologies for that, getting a bit carried away with the moment, but you get the idea.)

This image hasnt been sharpened, repaired or colour corrected, either during the scan or in post.

Here I have used Epsons Digital ICE technology to remove dust and scratches, and I think its done an excellent job. It does slow the scan times down considerably, but its worth it for special images, and it saves manually cloning in Photoshop, Aperture or Lightroom. I have also applied in-scan sharpening, in fact too much as you can see the effect this has had on the right side (camera right) of my torso, causing a nasty blocky edge.

This is the final version after a quick going over in Aperture 3. Being a bit lazy I didnt re-scan and start again, so you can still see the blocky edge to my right side.
So find out where those old 35mm slides are, get scanning and put those timeless images on Flickr, Picasa or another photo sharing site where you can raise a smile, a laugh and perhaps a tear, but definitely embarrass a few friends and family in the process.
Current technology allows you to view them at home, on your laptop or iPhone and you no longer get trodden on when your big sister decides she needs to leave the room and its too dark to see you lounging on the floor. And Dad doesnt go crazy when someone knocks over over the next three cassettes full of carefully arranged slides!
Oh happy days....
