To 4G or not to 4G

Nothing to do with photography, weddings or the other usual stuff, but I felt compelled to blog on the latest must have thing in the mobile world, 4G.

Ive had my iPhone 5 for a couple of months now and am pleased with the bigger screen (previous iPhones screens seem so small when you get used to the 5!) Its also quicker and generally a good upgrade. I was content. Then I had one of those unsolicited calls and managed to resist hanging up for long enough to hear that EE where offering me free 4G at the same price as my current T-Mobile contract. I had concerns that I would lose my unlimited 3G data allowance and have only 500mb per month, but when I was told that I had only averaged 200-odd in the previous months, and that included watching a few movies on Netflix, I thought why not? So I took the plunge.

A few days later I had my new nano sim from EE and after a quick text, I was 4G enabled. The first thing to say is that, when you get a 4G connection, which in Central London seems just about everywhere, the speed is impressive. A quick check showed speeds in excess of 20mb. You really notice the difference, and all for the same monthly price. However, its not all good news....

The first thing I noticed was that after about three days I had used over 200mb of my 500mb monthly allowance. All Id used it for was a few quick looks at the gorgeous (if flawed) Apple maps and the odd  YouTube clip, but no movies.  Clearly 500mb is not going to be enough for anyone who wants to do more than check a few e-mails on the go. The second thing I noticed was the effect on battery life; after minimal use during a work day, my battery was dead even before I had got home. Not good when Im used to getting home with 40-50% battery life left.

So, Im still within the 14 day cooling off period and guess what? Im going back to 3G, no worries about exceeding my limit, and 3G can actually be pretty fast when you get a good signal. So, to 4G? If you can afford a big enough allowance to meet your demand then go for it, otherwise my advice would be to stick with 3G and wait for the price to drop.
